Florida has several major international airports. Miami International Airport, Orlando International Airport and Tampa International Airport all serviced more than 15 million travelers each in 2005. There are secondary airports, and several smaller regional airports. But for the traveler coming in from other countries, the three listed airports are those you would be visiting most often.
Sanford also has an international airport (approximately 6 miles from Sanford), Orlando Sanford International (formerly Sanford regional). Because the owners of Orlando Sanford International also own London Luton Airport, Cardiff International Airport, and Belfast International Airport (all located in the United Kingdom), Orlando Sanford is mostly serviced by British carriers. If you’re coming from the U.K. you’d more than likely be landing here. Airlines frequenting the terminals include Allegiant Air, Flyglobespan, and Icelandair. International charters include First Choice, Monarch, My Travel, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomsonfly, Travel City Direct and XL Airways (with most destinations being the major international airports in the U.K.). There are many villas for hire in both Sanford and Orlando, close to the airport or further in town, so you need not worry about where you’re staying once you land.
Orlando International Airport, about 13 miles from Orlando, sees many different airlines at the international terminal (A) – from Aer Lingus to Zoom Airlines and everything in between. It has five different dining and shopping areas, as well as a fine dining area.
If you are travelling to Florida to visit the Disney tourist areas, Orlando or Sanford airports are the ones you’d be flying in to. Orlando is much closer, but Sanford is not that far from Disney golf and theme parks (Sanford is only about 28 miles from Orlando). Again, villas are available in and around the Disney area, so after a hard day playing golf or visiting the theme parks you can collapse in the spa, relax in the heated pool or with a game console – all in air conditioned comfort.
Miami International Airport, just over 6.5 miles from Miami, is host to another abundance of airlines – AeroMexico, British Airways, Caribbean Airways, Delta Air Lines, Eurofly, Finnair, Gulfstream… The list goes. The airport has its own hotel, with dining and shopping available in all seven terminals.
Tampa International Airport, a bit more than eight miles from Tampa, is serviced by a smaller number of airlines, but international airlines nonetheless. There are shops and restaurants available at each of the four terminals.
One thing to bear in mind, is that in the current climate American airports are under strict security. It might pay to read all the fine print that comes with your tickets, and check the website pertaining to the airports you’ll be travelling to and from. Security alerts change, and what you may or may not be allowed to take on a plane will change too – from time to time and airline to airline. Limits on amounts, and requirements for carrying, certain every day materials apply, and are strictly enforced.
There are many airlines that fly into the airports located in and around Florida, and there are plenty of discount flights to Florida. Flights can be booked online, or see your local travel agent for package deals and special flight offers. Book your villa accommodation when you book your flights, so you can be sure everything is taken care of before you even land. You’re sure to find an affordable flight to Florida with the profusion of airlines available!
Free WiFi at Orlando International
Orlando International Airport (OIA) is now offering free wireless internet service to its many travelers in all terminals. The purpose of having wireless for the entire airport is not just for travelers. The goal of this new system is to facilitate better coordination between airport and ground crews for easier check ins, faster bag handling and the like.

With the wintry weather on the way, Southwest Airlines is seeking to give its customers a taste of summer with new flights from cold spots Detroit and Denver to the Florida resort of Orlando.
