LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., March 11, 2009 – As part of The Walt Disney Company's first consolidated corporate responsibility report, Walt Disney World Resort released the 2008 Community Report that highlights the many ways the company remains actively involved in Central Florida.
The community report focuses on accomplishments related to the environment, workplace and community, with a special emphasis on children and families. The detailed snapshot also represents the latest phase in Disney's longstanding heritage of corporate social responsibility and reflects a company-wide effort to build an integrated, transparent strategy for serving the needs of primary stakeholders, including guests, Cast Members, shareholders, business partners and local communities.
"Our commitment to the Central Florida community is unwavering," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "We are focused on helping to make this community an inviting and dynamic place to live, work and play, not only for ourselves, but also for our nearly two million neighbors."
In 2008, Walt Disney World Resort and its Cast Members contributed approximately $32.5 million to local organizations for programs that focus on building a brighter future for children in Central Florida. In addition, Disney VoluntEARS donated more than 204,000 hours to benefit local non-profit organizations. Highlights from the report include:
The Environment
Walt Disney World Resort is committed to minimizing its overall impact on the environment as it encourages and inspires environmentally responsible behavior on the part of Cast Members, guests and business partners.
In collaboration with Keep Brevard Beautiful and the Ocean Conservancy, Disney VoluntEARS participated in the 2008 Florida Coastal Cleanup, removing more than 3,500 pounds of trash and storm debris from the shores of Lake Fran in Orlando.
Conservation biologists from Disney's Animal Programs released a loggerhead sea turtle into the Atlantic Ocean as part of a program to raise awareness of threats to sea turtle survival.
In April, Walt Disney World Resort completed the state's Green Lodging certification program for its 23 Central Florida resort hotels and Disney's Vero Beach Resort. The Florida Green Lodging Program is a voluntary state initiative that encourages hotels and motels to adopt cost-saving green practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources.
Our Workplace
Walt Disney World Resort is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace. In recognition of the magic Cast Members create for guests each and every day, Walt Disney World Resort offers a wide variety of programs, services and benefits that are designed to make a difference in Cast Members' lives.
In October, Walt Disney World Resort opened the Center for Living Well – a state-of-the-art, on-site health and wellness center – to provide eligible Cast Members and their families a "one-stop shop" for primary medical care and related services. The $6 million, 15,000-square-foot facility includes a pharmacy, lab, basic radiology, and wellness and behavioral health resources.
With 62,000 Cast Members speaking 59 languages from 81 countries, diversity and inclusion are core values that drive growth, creativity and innovation at Walt Disney World Resort. The company received the highest honor at the 2008 Beacon Awards ceremony, which celebrates diversity in the greater Orlando-area workforce.
Walt Disney World Resort is actively involved in cultivating the workforce of the future. In January 2008, the resort hosted Disney's Dreamers Academy, an innovative program that aims to expose high-school students to creative and non-traditional career opportunities, while inspiring them to exceed the boundaries of their dreams and imaginations.
Our Community
A tradition of community service has been an integral part of the Disney heritage since the company's early beginnings in Central Florida. That commitment extends from charitable giving to minority business development to generating tax revenue for the local community.
In March, Central Florida celebrated the opening of a Boys & Girls Clubs facility in the Pine Hills area of Orlando. Walt Disney World Resort donated $1 million toward the construction of the new building which includes computer stations, learning centers, game rooms and a multi-purpose gym.
Walt Disney World Resort awarded $700,000 in Disney's Helping Kids Shine Grants to 38 Central Florida non-profit organizations for programs that focused on building better futures for children.
During the 2008 Heart of Florida United Way Campaign, Cast Members contributed $3.2 million to help local agencies assist fellow residents in Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties.
Walt Disney World Cast Members conducted a successful Back-to-School Supply Drive, donating more than 6,000 backpacks to Central Florida students and more than 467,000 supplies to A Gift for Teaching.
In August, Walt Disney World Resort helped bring a second Historically Black College and University football game to Central Florida. The MEAC / SWAC challenge brought thousands of fans to Central Florida from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Walt Disney Company has announced ambitious new environmental plan, a day ahead of the company's annual shareholder meeting.
The plan outlined in its "corporate responsibility" report, states an objective of cutting carbon emissions from fuels by half by 2012, with an ultimate aim of net zero direct greenhouse gas emissions from its offices, retail complexes, theme parks and cruise lines.
Disney also set a long-term goal to cut to near zero the waste it sends to landfills, much of it from construction, by diverting some to recycling centers, composting and buying more post-consumer recycled materials.
The company pledged to reduce water use as well as emissions and waste associated with the manufacture, transport, use and disposal of Disney products.
By 2013, Disney also plans to reduce electricity consumption by 10 percent compared to 2006.
To get to zero net direct emissions, Disney plans to find efficiencies to cut emissions and to replace high-carbon fuels with low-carbon alternatives, then use "high-quality offsets" for what is left.
Disney also plans to buy clean electricity from utilities and invest in clean electricity projects, in addition to taking steps to conserve, the report said.
The goals were set even though the company plans to expand its California theme park and launch two new cruise ships by 2012
A kaleidoscope of colors and elaborate light displays will decorate the skies on the final night of 2008 at Walt Disney World Resort.
Dazzling fireworks showers, live entertainment and extended park hours throughout the Vacation Kingdom on Dec. 31 make it a popular spot to ring in the new year.
At Epcot, a special version of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” the laser-light spectacular featuring dancing flames and cascading fountains orchestrated to an original musical score, will be presented at 7:40 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. The park’s Dec. 31 operating hours are 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios will host “Fantasmic!,” the lavish spectacular of water animation, lasers and fireworks, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Revelers can “rock on” with live performances by in-park band “Mulch, Sweat and Shears,” plus a DJ spinning tunes at Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat. A special “Lights, Camera, Happy New Year” fireworks show brings in the new year at 11:50 p.m. The park is open from 9 a.m. until midnight on Dec. 31.
Late-nighters can party at Magic Kingdom until the wee hours with parades and fireworks galore. The park is aglow with “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade” at 12 noon and 3 p.m., followed by the wondrous “SpectroMagic” parade at 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. “Holiday Wishes” fireworks, the boldest and brightest pyrotechnics show at Disney, takes place at 8:30 p.m. capped with the grand finale “Fantasy in the Sky” fireworks at 11:50 p.m. On Dec. 31, the park is open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 31. Guests can enjoy one of the final presentations of the romping character cavalcade “Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade” at 3:45 p.m.
Belgian brewing giant InBev acquired the parks as part of its $52-billion purchase of Anheuser-Busch Cos.
Some experts now believe that InBev will sell off the parks to reduce debt, potential suitors being named include British Merlin Entertainment’s Group and Spanish Parques Reunidos who are keen to expand into the consolidating U.S parks market..
New ownership could bring about changes at familiar parks. Traditional park owners like Busch have concentrated on return on investment in new attractions. Others, like Disney and Universal, create synergies with other corporate goals of selling films, TV shows and licensed character merchandise.
Busch used its theme parks as an extension of its beer marketing. But the parks nonetheless stood on their own profitability. They also were a personal obsession of the Busch family, which now only occupies a board seat at the new AB InBev.
It's one reason Busch parks stand apart from more traditional regional parks and can compete with the deeper pockets of Disney and Universal. Busch poured tens of millions of dollars to bring Sea World up to Busch standards after buying the park in the 1990s. At Busch Gardens Africa in Tampa the landscaping backstage in employee areas is as manicured as the rest of the park.
As the biggest tourist attraction in the Tampa Bay area, Busch Gardens plays a major role in shaping the region's appeal as a tourist destination
But as to the future of the parks Busch executives remain silent.
Beginning next year, visitors to Florida's Walt Disney World will be able to access park information on their cell phones. Whilst the precise features are still being worked out it is believed that information will include show locations, wait times for rides and messages from Disney characters.
Everyone who visits a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park on their birthday in 2009 can get in free, as Disney Parks embraces a newly identified family travel trend called “celebration vacations.”
In this new national trend, American families are hitting the road to mark life’s special occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, reunions and more – with a “celebration vacation.” In 2009, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts will lead this growing trend with new entertainment and services that allow guests to turn their personal milestones into magical Disney experiences.
And to kick it all off – a first-ever opportunity for guests to receive a free ticket to one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on their birthday in 2009.
“Birthdays are the one occasion that we all share every year,” said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “We thought a free birthday ticket would be the icing on the cake as we extend this new ‘celebration vacation’ trend to Disney Parks.”
Whether a guest is celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, Quinceañera or any special occasion, Disney parks already are filled with favourite characters, world-class attractions and entertainment, and legendary guest service – exactly the “something for everyone” that trend-watchers say families look for in a “celebration vacation.”

It took nearly 3,000 designers and 4,000 construction workers to build the first phase of Epcot.
54 million cubic feet of dirt was excavated to build the park.
Epcot had its soft opening Sept. 28, 1982, at 4 p.m.
Spaceship Earth, the visual and thematic centerpiece of Epcot, weighs 16 million pounds, measures 165 feet in diameter and encompasses 2.2 million cubic feet of space.
The outer "skin" of Spaceship Earth is made up of 11,324 aluminum and plastic-alloy triangles.
At Spaceship Earth, Mickey Mouse is hidden in his own constellation just beyond the attraction's loading area.
The fountain at Epcot Innoventions Plaza can shoot water 150 feet in the air -- within 30 feet of the top of Spaceship Earth. If all of the shooters were fired at once, there would be 2,000 gallons of water in the air.
The ride technology for the Soarin' attraction was based on an erector set model created by Walt Disney Imagineer Mark Sumner. One million pounds of steel provides the ride structure and 37 tons are lifted during each ride cycle.
It took more than 650 Walt Disney Imagineers more than 350,000 hours (the equivalent of 40 years of time) to develop Mission: SPACE. The Imagineers' efforts took place over a five-year period.
At Mission: SPACE, there are 13 quotes by space explorers and visionaries on the attraction's wall of honor. The most recent was added in September 2007 by teacher-turned-astronaut Barbara Morgan, reading "Reach for your dreams . . . the sky is no limit."
At nearly a mile long and reaching a top speed of 65 mph, Test Track is the longest and fastest ride at a Walt Disney World theme park.
The body of water at The Seas with Nemo & Friends provides a home to 3,000 fish and other sea creatures and contains 5.7 million gallons of water, one of the largest man-made ocean environments in the world.
More than 30 tons of fruits and vegetables grown at The Land pavilion each year are served in Walt Disney World restaurants.
The Land has a "tomato tree" that is the only one of its kind in the United States. The massive plant has produced a world-record harvest of more than 32,000 tomatoes from a single vine.
The gardens of Epcot are among the most extensive at Walt Disney World Resort. The themed landscapes are maintained year-round by a horticulture staff of more than 50.
At United Kingdom's Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room in World Showcase, a specially designed ale warmer can heat your Guinness to 55 degrees, the temperature favored by Brits.
The Eiffel Tower replica in the France pavilion is 103 feet tall.
A Disney crew carried a 300-pound camera up 4,500 steps of the Huangshan Mountain in the Annui Province to film the Circle-Vision 360 film seen in the China pavilion.
Each year at the annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, more than 33,000 bottles of wine and champagne are uncorked, 1.2 million hors d'oeuvre plates are served and 100,000 miniature desserts are dished up.
More than 26,000 feet of lights outline the World Showcase pavilions for the "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" nightly fireworks show -- a string long enough to stretch across the Golden Gate Bridge more than six times.
Earth Globe is a 28-foot-diameter sphere on World Showcase Lagoon and the centerpiece of "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth." The globe weighs 350,000 pounds and is wrapped in more than 180,000 Light Emitting Diodes arranged in the shape of Earth's continents.
Some 2,800 firework shells are used during each "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" show.
Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and Universal Orlando Resort are partnering to create the world’s first fully immersive Harry Potter themed environment based on the bestselling books by J.K. Rowling and blockbuster feature films from Warner Bros. Envisioned as a “theme park within a theme park” and titled “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” the new environment will become part of the experience within Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park at the Universal Orlando Resort and is scheduled to arrive December 2009.
Building work continues at Yak & Yeti an Asian themed full service, table dining restaurant within Asia at Disney's Animal Kingdom when it opens later this year. It will be run, by Landry's Restaurants Inc., the same people who run the Rainforest Cafes at Animal Kingdom and Downtown Disney.

In June 2005, SeaWorld Orlando announced that they were planning a third park in Orlando and in August 2005 the plans were approved by Orange County.
The new park, called Aquatica, SeaWorld's Water Park is scheduled to open in March 2008.
The park will be located on the east side International Drive, south of Sea Harbor Drive between the existing SeaWorld park and the Williamsburg residential subdivision. It will be about one third the size of the original SeaWorld water theme park and about twice the size of Discovery Cove with visitor numbers expected to be limited to around 7,500 people per day. It will be built on approx 58 acres of land.
Aquatica will be a combination of animal experiences, water rides and slides, high-speed thrills and relaxing sandy beaches.
SeaWorld have also said the park will be unique and they also plan to offer their guests very short lines for the attractions which suggests numbers will be restricted.
The new Aquatica water park will feature 36 water slides, six winding rivers and lagoons with tropical fish.
There are two large side-by-side wave lagoons, offering two very different experiences; one has crashing waves and 5 ft swells whilst the other has a gently rolling surf. It is possible to generate nine differenty wave patterns.
The winding rivers also offer different journeys from calm to extreme with gentle waterfalls past exotic parrots into an undersea grotto full of colourful tropical fish in one and rolling rapids, racing waters and rushing geysers in the other.
Amongst the 12 main attractions there are also eight-lane racing slides, racing tunnels, triple-drop raft rides and inner tube river adventures.
Small children and toddlers are not forgotten with an enormous interactive water play area including a 60 ft high rain fortress besides a 15,000 pool plus special family orientated slides and water cannon.
Aquatica also boasts over 80,000 square feet of white sandy beaches where you can relax in the shade of your own personal cabana and take advantage of the beachside service.
Some attractions will also bring the guests into close proximity with dolphins and other marine animals; a "total immersion in the sea".
The landscaping is themed on the beautiful lush flora of the South Sea Islands, New Zealand, Australia and New Guinea with crystal clear rivers, hidden grottos and sparkling waterfalls.
Buildings are brightly coloured and there will be carved totem poles decorations taken from New Zealand's Maori culture.
Commerson's dolphins
One of the signature attractions of the new park is a very special water slide. It consists of a pair of clear acrylic tubes that swimsuit clad guests will slide down through a pool inhabited by black and white Commerson's dolphins, giving the impression of flying under water.
Though you will not be able to touch the dolphins (unlike at Discovery Cove) you will get very close to them.
The Commerson's dolphins look a bit like a miniature killer whales and are smaller than the more familiar bottlenose dolphins more usually associated with theme parks. They are very agile and will often jump out of the water.
The Commerson's dolphins will be brought over from SeaWorld in San Diego.
This authentic $60 million launch simulation will open May 25, 2007, taking visitors on their own journey of the space shuttle’s voyage to Earth’s orbit. Under the guidance of NASA and veteran space shuttle astronauts, this unprecedented experience duplicates the sights, sounds and sensations of launching into space fully vertical in launch mode position.
*** Shuttle Launch Experience, three years in the making, will take visitors through the sensations of launching into Earth’s orbit from the birthplace of U.S. space exploration – Kennedy Space Center. A team of astronauts, NASA experts and renowned attraction designers conceived this authentic experience, deploying sophisticated motion technology, special effects seats and high fidelity visual and audio presentations.
*** “Shuttle Launch Experience will forge a lasting impression for everyone, especially those who have seen the power of a shuttle launch and imagined the adventure of flying in the most complex machine ever made,” said Daniel LeBlanc, Chief Operating Officer of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “Not only will guests experience the thrill of launching into space, they will marvel at the view of Earth from space, through state-of-the-art technology.”
*** Shuttle Launch Experience combines the detailed accounts of astronaut experiences with the expertise of premiere design engineers to produce an attraction unique to theme parks around the world. Its technical highlights include authentic simulation of the space shuttle’s eight and a half minute launch into orbit, custom-designed crew pods with unprecedented vertical range, high-definition audiovisual effects, and advanced seating effects to maximize the reality of the experience.
*** The journey begins as visitors enter the Shuttle Launch Simulation Facility, architecturally inspired by space shuttle facilities at Kennedy Space Center. As visitors ascend along the gantry, astronaut testimonials set the stage for what is to come. Entering the heart of shuttle operations for the pre-launch briefing, crew members are guided by veteran Shuttle Commander Charlie Bolden as he takes them step-by-step through the launch sequence. They then enter the crew pod in the shuttle’s cargo bay and strap in for launch. For the next five minutes, the pod’s 44 passengers see, feel and live the trip to 17,500 mph. As the shuttle bay doors open, what follows is a breathtaking view of Earth seldom seen in the first person.
*** A team of attraction experts have designed and engineered Shuttle Launch Experience into the most realistic launch simulation ever created.
It has been announced that a new water park is due to open in March 2008.
The new water park will be across the street from SeaWorld Orlando's Discovery Cove and will have 36 slides and 80 square feet of beach modeled after some of the most exotic places in the world.
It will also have the largest interactive play station in the world for kids to play in.
County leaders say the park is expected to bring even more tourist dollars to the Orlando area.

We're always being told to get fit and do more exercise, well now the animals at America's Sea World park have decided to get in on the act.
Seahook the walrus is just one of the park's attractions to have decided to do something about his excess blubber.
He even has a personal trainer to put him through his paces by doing push-ups and sit-ups, although swimming is still his favourite work-out.
Dolphins, pigs and dogs at the park are also adopting healthier lifestyles.
Spinner, a six-year-old border collie, has started skipping with his trainer, pigs at the zoo are snacking on fresh fruit and watermelon, while the dolphins and pilot whales are having regular weigh-ins.
Location: At the Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise, Florida (Greater Fort Lauderdale)
Every child has dreams of being an astronaut, firefighter, circus clown, or another fanciful career. Taking the "infotainment" concept to a new level, Wannado City offers kids a supercharged environment to play out their dreams. While the Wannado folks call their place a theme park, there are no roller coasters or talking pirates here. Instead, there is an array of interactive tableaus in which children can try out a wide variety of professions.
Wanna be a doctor? Wannado City's hospital has actual incubators (although the babies are realistic-looking dolls). Its radio station has working broadcast equipment, and its dental clinic has a kid-sized dentist's chair that goes up and down. Other areas include an archeological dig site, a flight academy, a Boradway theater, a cooking academy, and a courthouse. In all, the attraction offers children a choice of 100 professions.
As in the real world, kids have to earn their keep. They receive "Wongas," Wannado City's currency, in exchange for working. They can spend their dough at the city's fair, which includes a mini carousel and Ferris wheel. The life lessons continue beyond the indoor park's gates. Located within the Sawgrass Mills Mall, Florida's largest shopping haven, parents will need a lot of real dough to navigate the 300-odd stores and shops
The resort will debut Universal 360: A Cinesphere Spectacular at its Universal Studios Florida park.
The nighttime show, which debuts in early July, will feature highlights from the studio's impressive movie catalog projected onto four, 40-foot-tall, 360-degree globes set up around the park's lagoon. The show will incorporate original music, lasers, and, because it's Universal, some in-your-face pyrotechnics. The resort says that it will develop other Cinesphere shows for its Halloween Horror Nights (which will move back to the Universal Studios park this year) and Christmas holiday events. At Islands of Adventure, the overhead track and show building at the edge of Seuss Landing that has been dormant since the park opened in 1999 will finally spring to life when the High In The Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride debuts in June. The attraction will feature scenes from Dr. Seuss stories, including Dr. Seuss's ABCs and The Sneetches and Other Stories. The CityWalk entertainment complex will welcome the Red Coconut Club in June and the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant in July.

Guests can listen to the stories of France's Pere Noel, Italy's LaBefana, and Santa Claus at the American Adventure, celebrate each evening with a tree-lighting ceremony, and discover richly diverse holiday traditions from the far corners of the world. They also can enjoy the Lights of Winter - a dazzling canopy of lights glittering with holiday cheer.
Candlelight Processional

The Candlelight Processional takes place in the America Gardens Theatre and can be experienced individually or as part of a Candlelight Dining Package.
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth
Witness a thrilling nighttime kaleidoscope as the sky erupts with over 1,000 laser bursts and the extraordinary Earth Globe floats across the lagoon. Young Nemo will take to the stage at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park in late November for Finding Nemo - The Musical. Inspired by Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo, the new Disney's Animal Kingdom stage show will perform multiple times daily in the Park's newly enclosed (and climate-controlled!) Theater in The Wild. Live performers will bring Marlin, Nemo, Dory and other starring characters to life with larger-than-life puppets by acclaimed artist Michael Curry (Broadway's The Lion King), while a diverse array of puppetry styles will put a new twist on peripheral characters.
Producers promise to send imaginations plunging to the ocean floor with vibrant scenes offering a fresh look at the beloved story and characters that made the Academy Award-winning film an instant classic.
Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will host the Old Spice Classic, a newly created eight-team, 12-game men's college basketball tournament, Nov. 23-24 and 26.
The inaugural tournament field will feature Arkansas, Marist, Minnesota, Montana, Southern Illinois, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Western Michigan. Five of these teams—Arkansas, Minnesota, Montana, Southern Illinois and West Virginia—earned berths in postseason tournaments last season. West Virginia had a particularly standout year, advancing to the "Sweet 16" in the NCAA Tournament. Montana and Southern Illinois, meanwhile, are the defending champions for their respective conferences.
The Old Spice Classic will feature four games each day, allowing each team to play daily. The two undefeated teams will face off in the championship match on the final day of the tournament, while the remaining teams play in consolation games.
"This new tournament only adds to the long list of premium, nationally recognized sports events taking place at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex," said Reggie Williams, Vice President of Disney Sports Attractions. "There is every reason to believe that this tournament will quickly develop a rich tradition and a distinctive presence within the landscape of major men's college basketball."
The entire competition will be televised live, with nine games on airing ESPN2 and three airing on ESPNU.
Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and at the Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex box office.
The Seas with Nemo & Friends (formerly known as The Living Seas) is leading Epcot Guests down under to enjoy a new ride featuring Nemo and stars from the hit Disney/Pixar film Finding Nemo.
Guests visiting this new Walt Disney World attraction board colorful "clamobiles" and join Mr. Ray's class on a field trip into the "Big Blue World," where young Nemo has, once again, wandered off. Guests help search for the curious clownfish, meeting plenty of familiar characters along the way.
Original animation from Pixar Animation Studios and innovative effects from Walt Disney Imagineering combine to bring the stars to life. In some scenes, characters appear to swim amid the living creatures that inhabit the pavilion's saltwater aquarium.
Upon exiting their "clamobiles," Guests may enjoy a variety of Finding Nemo-inspired experiences, including Turtle Talk with Crush, featuring real-time interactions with the bodacious sea turtle, and Bruce's Shark World, an interactive area offering insight into the world of sharks.
DISNEY GUIDELINES
Walt Disney Co.'s new guidelines for children's foods are based in part on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans published jointly by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Carrots, apples and low-fat milk are replacing french fries and soda at Walt Disney World as the company adopts a new attitude toward theme-park food, especially for kids.
Soon, visitors to Disney World and other Disney theme parks might have to search for big portions of junk food because they'll be pushed to the bottoms of menus. Snacks will get smaller and less sugary. Burgers, french fries and pizza will be less fatty. Items such as fruit on a stick will show up more.
Walt Disney Co. President Robert Iger on Monday announced a two-year plan to improve nutrition not just in the theme parks but in any food the company sells, brands or promotes. That includes foods in restaurants that offer Disney toys and consumer products available in some stores, including Publix Super Markets.
Disney's changes begin with children's meals but will affect adult foods as well, Disney officials said. Calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium and sugar will be restricted in all children-focused foods, from chicken nuggets to ice-cream snacks. Trans fats will be cut from foods by the end of 2007 in the theme parks and the end of 2008 for Disney foods sold elsewhere.
Disney's not alone. SeaWorld Orlando and its parent company, Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks, on Monday also announced a commitment to healthful foods. SeaWorld is restricting calories, fats and sugars in some foods, has converted a whole restaurant, Mama's Kitchen, to nutritious foods and is offering fruit alternatives to fries.
Want fries with that?
Some changes are already in place at Disney World. Children's meals come with carrots, applesauce or grapes, low-fat milk, water or 100 percent fruit juice.
If children want fries or soda, they will have to make special requests. And some fried foods such as chicken nuggets are now free of added trans fats and cooked in oils free of trans fats, Disney said.

Little Nemo is making a big splash at Walt Disney World
Three years after the release of Pixar's animated blockbuster film Finding Nemo, the little cartoon fish and his friends are getting new rides at Epcot, a whole Epcot pavilion renamed for them, plus a new show at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Including the Turtle Talk With Crush show that opened at Epcot in late 2004, Finding Nemo is about to become one of the most visible franchises in Mickey's realm.
"It's such a compelling movie with great characters, great story line; it just translates so well here," said Kathy Mangum, vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering and executive producer of the new ride, The Seas With Nemo & Friends, which opens in mid-October to season ticket holders and possibly in late October to everyone else.
That family-oriented ride will take visitors on a relaxing voyage through an undersea world, where Nemo gets lost again, and his father, Marlin, and friends, including Dori and Crush, find him again.
This time the adventure mixes new, high-tech animation projection techniques recently developed by Walt Disney Imagineering with Epcot's 20-year-old, 6 million-gallon aquarium. The result: After Nemo and his friends move through a few constructed sets with robotic jellyfish and other animals, their images appear in the aquarium, looking as if they're swimming among real fish, rays, sharks and turtles.
The ride is housed in Epcot's sea pavilion, which also features Turtle Talk and other displays now carrying the Nemo theme. For a couple of years, models of Nemo and his friends have highlighted a garden out front. Now the whole pavilion is getting a Nemo makeover. A mural with more Nemo-themed sea life is being painted on the pavilion's exterior. Robotic sea gulls, borrowed from the movie, stand out front and will shout, "Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine!"
And when the wooden construction walls come down in a couple of weeks, people will see the former The Living Seas Pavilion has been renamed, with the same name as the ride: The Seas With Nemo & Friends Pavilion.
Nemo doesn't stop there.
"Finding Nemo -- The Musical," a new stage show, opens with previews in November and a grand opening in January at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

In reaction to news today that Pluto was demoted to the status of "dwarf planet," the Seven Dwarfs issued their own short statement:
"Although we think it's DOPEY that Pluto has been downgraded to a dwarf planet, which has made some people GRUMPY and others just SLEEPY, we are not BASHFUL in saying we would be HAPPY if Disney's Pluto would join us as an eighth dwarf. We think this is just what the DOC ordered and is nothing to SNEEZE at."
As Mickey Mouse's faithful companion, Pluto made his debut in 1930 -- the same year that scientists discovered what they believed was a ninth planet.
Said a white-gloved, yellow-shoed source close to Disney's top dog, "I think the whole thing is goofy. Pluto has never been interested in astronomy before, other than maybe an occasional howl at the moon."
TAMPA, Fla. (August 2006) – A female white rhinoceros was born on Wednesday August 16, 2006, at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.
Weighing in at an estimated 100 pounds, this is the second rhino born to mother Mlelani and father Tombo. The October 2004 birth of Mlelani and Tombo’s first calf, Malaika, meaning Angel, marked the first white rhino birth in the adventure park’s 46-year history. Busch Gardens participates in the American Zoological and Aquarium Association (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) to ensure genetic diversification among threatened and endangered animals in zoological facilities. The birth brings the total white and black rhino population at the adventure park to 12.
Park guests can get up-close views of the white rhinos via the Serengeti Express Train, which travels right through the open habitat, as well as from the Skyride and Rhino Rally. The rhinos share their habitat with other herds of African animals and birds.

“Shamu Express” Roller Coaster Thrills Parents and Children Alike
ORLANDO, Fla. – SeaWorld Orlando has taken flight with the “Shamu Express” – the park’s first family-oriented roller coaster. Themed after SeaWorld’s famous killer whale, the “Shamu Express” will gently thrill 28 children and parents in killer whale-themed cars down more than 850 feet of track at 26 mph.
Two more brand new “kid-friendly” additions include a jellyfish-themed samba tower ride and a waterspout-themed tea cup ride. “Jazzy Jellies” will lift and spin families in jellyfish-themed seats while “Swishy Fishies” will enable adventurous youngsters to sit in themed seats while they spin around a giant waterspout.
“This expansion adds even more thrills for our youngest guests, who may be riding a roller coaster for the first time” said Jim Atchison, executive vice president and general manager of SeaWorld Orlando and Discovery Cove. “To further the family experience, parents can also ride with their children.”
Currently, Shamu’s Happy Harbor is a three-acre children’s play area that offers SeaWorld’s littlest guests four stories of colorful climbing nets and tunnels, nine slippery slides and a splashy water maze.

"The Lost Spacecraft: Liberty Bell 7 Recovered,” an interactive exhibit featuring Gus Grissom’s Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft, lost in the Atlantic Ocean in July 1961 and recovered 38 years later, will be on display at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. From May 26 through September 10, 2006, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will be the final museum stop for the Liberty Bell 7 touring exhibit before going on permanent display. This exhibit made its national debut at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in 2000.
“Liberty Bell 7 Recovered” will take guests on a virtual ride with Astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom 118 miles into space and then three miles below the ocean’s surface where the Mercury capsule sat untouched for 38 years. Visitors will flash back to 1961 to experience astronaut training, spacecraft technology and launch sequences. They will then fast-forward to 1999 to follow the exciting events surrounding the rescue of the spacecraft and personal triumph by deep-sea search and recovery expert Curt Newport and his Discovery Channel expedition team.
In addition to the Liberty Bell 7 exhibit, Visitor Complex guests can see Astronaut Gus Grissom’s Mercury spacesuit on display at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. On the “Cape Canaveral: Then and Now” tour, visitors can view Launch Pad 5/6, the very place Gus Grissom’s Mercury flight launched from 45 years ago.
Liberty Bell 7, America's second manned space flight, was flown in 1961 by Astronaut and U.S. Air Force Colonel Virgil “Gus” Grissom on a mission that lasted 15 minutes and 37 seconds.
When it splashed down in the Atlantic, the hatch blew open unexpectedly. Grissom narrowly escaped before the spacecraft sank to the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. For nearly four decades, it remained NASA's only lost spacecraft.
