The United States has a well maintained and very extensive transportation network that provides many options to travel between cities and states. You can choose to drive by car, take a bus or a train or fly to your next destination. In local areas you will find subways, trolleys, ferries and taxis all designed to make it easy to get where you want to go.

Depending on where you are traveling to and from, you can decide the best mode of transportation. On the East coast area between New York, Washington, D.C. and Boston the network of trains is very efficient and are often used for commuting for people who live and work in those areas. However, the farther west you go, the less trains are used although they are certainly available and offer a great way to see the country without the hassle of driving yourself.

Amtrak is the national rail service and offers 15 and 30 day unlimited USA rail passes along with other options that are more regional in nature. Train travel on the California Zephyr offers a scenic trip from Chicago to San Francisco and another called the Coastal Starlight provides a beautiful trip along the California coastline from Los Angeles to Seattle that is well worth looking into.

If you are in a hurry to get from one city or area of the country to another, flying offers the fastest and sometimes the cheapest way to get there. With large airport hubs in cities like Chicago or Dallas, you can also try smaller regional airports that might give you a more affordable fare and are not that much out of the way. For instance, New York City is served by three airports, La Guardia, Kennedy and Newark which is in New Jersey and all are easily accessible by taxi or bus to Manhattan which is usually the destination of those traveling to New York.

Greyhound Bus Lines offers another more affordable means of transportation along with Trailways that is a regional bus service. If you want to utilize their services extensively, you should purchase a discounted Greyhound International Ameripass that is only available outside the U.S. so once you arrive, you will be able to get passes but they probably won’t be as easy on your budget.

Driving on the U.S. highway system offers you the opportunity to go exactly where you want to go. With an excellent roadway system that is well maintained with signage making it easy to find your way, this offers the best way to really see the country first hand. You can rent a car at the airport or in any town or city and even in some hotels. Americans love their road trips so you will be one of millions who travel the highways every day, but gas is easily available and although the price are higher than in years past, it is still more affordable than most foreigners are used to.
